Welcome to Thirty with new Olay Facial Cleanser

Jun 19, 2018

olay deep cleansing infusions, oil of olay cleanser, deep sea kelp cleanser, lifestyle blogger, xo samantha brooke, drugstore beauty finds, olay cleaners

Guys. I turned THIRTY this past weekend. My sister and I share a birthday, she turned 20, plus it was Father's Day weekend so our family just went out to celebrate all three. Not going to lie, I felt a little cheated this year, ha! Regardless, I was excited for some family time and some cake 🍰 Why is cake so much better on your birthday??

A few things change as you get older. My priorities, wants, dreams are very different from even last year. Things I once considered boring years ago are now fun. I can't eat junk food without consequences (so sad). I've always known that time is valuable but I'm now also seeing (such a revelation!) how short life is. I feel like a completely different person now compared to the last few years. It's called personal growth and it is wonderful. Even my 'life plan' has changed tremendously. If you had told me ten years ago when I was busting my butt working full time while in school that I would be a licensed esthetician who decided photography was more my thing but also chose to blog on the side...I probably would have thought you were crazy. You think you have your entire life planned out then the universe comes and slaps you in the face like, WRONG!

One of my not-so-favorite changes that comes with age is how my skin can feel if I neglect it- even for just a day. You guys know I'm a skincare fanatic and it's just a fact for most people as they age that their skin gets a little more dry, a little more thin, and a bit less elastic. There are tons of products out there for anti-aging but the biggest thing for me is moisture. Not only does keeping your skin moisturized help with the look of your skin (boy does it help!), it also helps maintain a healthy balance. Do you know a lot of people lose a ton of moisture from their skin when they wash their face?? That's why it's so important to find a good facial cleanser that isn't too harsh and won't strip away all those good oils necessary to maintain a healthy balance. Olay Cleansing Infusion Facial Cleanser with deep sea kelp is my latest skincare obsession, it draws out impurities while the soy-based formula keeps you hydrated for a natural glow. I love that my face feels clean and refreshed but not dry and tight. Deep sea kelp and aloe extract hydrate, while soybean oil (an antioxidant) helps with past damage and leaves your skin soft and glowing. Antioxidants are so vital for good skin. They fight free radicals, which are unstable atoms that damage cells (from sun exposure, toxins, pretty much just day to day life) and help counteract the damage that those free radicals do. I found that one pump of this cleanser was enough and it lathers nicely. I have to have a lather when I wash my face. I know it's a mental thing but I just feel cleaner after, ha!

And like I said, my idea of 'fun' has changed tremendously. A clean face, cup of tea, and a bath with lavender...this is my idea of an exciting night...which is exacty what I did after a fun dinner and some time spent with loved ones 👵 Welcome to thirty 💗

Spring Perfume

May 11, 2018

Spring is in full bloom and so is my garden! I can't believe how well my peonies (pictured!) and roses are doing...not going to lie, I'm impressed haha. I like to switch up my smells for each season- candles and perfumes :) For fall and winter I like warmer, foodsie smells (think vanilla, rum scents). Then for spring I adore florals, and summer I love beachy fragrances. Givenchy Live Irresistible Blossom Crush is the ultimate spring fragrance. It smells of rose, berries, and peonies. It's a sweet scent but the hint of cocoa bean helps to tone it down. Obsessed.

Intro to Dermarolling

Apr 10, 2018

diy skincare, dermarolling, microneedling, dermarolling step by step, dermarolling diy, dermaroller amazon, titanium dermaroller, life and messy hair, xo samantha brooke, samantha brooke

What it is/what it does:
Dermarolling basically puts your skin into damage control mode. You are 'tricking', so to speak, your skin into thinking it needs to create more elastin and collagen, ya know, to combat those tiny holes you are putting in it with the dermaroller. So your skin goes into overdrive and creates collagen and elastin, which we know are essential for firm and younger looking skin. This procedure also helps your skincare work more effectively by allowing your serum and moisturizer to get in the deeper layers of skin.

What to use:
I use a .25 mm dermaroller, which is the perfect length for fine lines, pore reduction, and skin discoloration. For deeper wrinkles it is recommended to use .5 mm to 1 mm, but honestly I wouldn't go longer than .5 mm unless you are going to see a licensed aesthetician or a dermatologist. Leave the deep stuff to the pros, just because you can scar your skin and it would kinda suck to have a million little scarred dots all over your face! After I use the dermaroller I apply a Vitamin C serum and Hyaluronic Acid serum. Vitamin C serum is loaded with antioxidants which combat free radicals and help with anti-aging, plus it will help your skin heal from the procedure. I then apply Hyaluronic Acid, which is a humectant, so it retains water and keeps your skin 'plump'- aka helps with the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Lastly I apply a moisturizer or oil to soothe the skin. FYI: You can apply a serum before you roll, it is completely up to you.

What to expect:
Just remember you control the pressure and that the needles will penetrate no deeper than the size indicated on your roller, but you can still damage your skin. Use moderate pressure and good judgement. I personally don't think it hurts at all- if you can handle waxing and tweezing you can definitely handle this!

How to use:
1. Disinfect your roller with alcohol and make sure your face is clean.
I do my face in four sections: forehead, cheeks, chin. (DO NOT ROLL on the skin around your eyes! This is thin delicate skin and you will cause damage.)

2. You do not need to press super hard into your skin, the needles will penetrate with moderate pressure. More is not better. Do each section 6-8 times both horizontally and vertically. For best results taut your skin (hold it tight) in the section you are rolling.

3. Rinse your face with water ONLY. You do not want to remove more oils or aggravate the freshly rolled skin with face wash or soap.

4. Apply your serums, oil/moisturizer. (A basic routine is ok after rolling, avoid harsh products and exfoliating.)

5. Wash and disinfect your dermaroller.

FYI: The longer the needles on your roller the less often you should do the procedure, for .25 mm it is recommended to do 2-3 times a week- I only do mine once a week. I have still seen results with once a week and I do not want to overdo it. But, do what works for you! Just be sure to use good judgement and make sure your skin is healed before you repeat the process.

Here are the products I use for this routine (in this order: Vitamin C, Hyaluronic Acid, Farsali moisturizing oil):

Bye Bye, Concealer

The best (and sometimes worst haha) part of being a licensed aestheticism is everyone always wants to know what they can do to improve the look of their skin sans makeup- especially this time of year when temps are rising. Who doesn’t want to wear less makeup when it’s 90 out?! The main areas I say focus on for a youthful look are your neck and under eye area. These two areas show aging first because of the delicate skin. Our under eyes are ten times thinner than the rest of our face and can show aging 30% faster...crazy right? One of my goals for 2018 was to not have to wear makeup, and by skipping foundation (haven't worn a foundation since January, gasp!) and taking care of the skin around my eyes, I have seen major changes in my skin.

So about this eye cream: VII Code T2 Oxygen Eye Cream helps to diminish fine lines and wrinkles, lessen dark circles, and leaves your skin amazingly soft. By containing vitamins and antioxidants from sources such as avocado 🥑 and chamomile ❀, the cream helps prevent free radical damage. Free radical damage is basically from all the bad things- alcohol, caffeine, sun damage, pollution, you know, all the fun stuff and antioxidants fight those bad things and keep our cells safe and healthy. Antioxidants are absolutely essential for healthy skin and anti-aging.

The oxygen cream comes with a 'crescent strip' to apply the formula to the under eye area, although you can totally just use your fingers. I personally like applicators, even if it's just to scoop the cream out with (I have a small collection hehe) because I don't like to stick my fingers in my beauty products. Once bacteria get in a jar it can cause breakouts and I'd just rather not 😑. So if you're looking to ditch the concealers before summer, this is where to start!
